What is the iPad?

Apple recently announced the arrival of the new Apple iPad in the United Kingdom.

At the moment there is some uncertainty about the UK price, however in the United States the cost varies from $499 for a Wi-Fi 16GB version up to $829 for a 64GB Wi-Fi and 3G version. Which brings us to the purpose of our site, which is to find you the best iPad deals as they become available in the UK. Our price comparison list will allow you to see real time prices and stock availability, as well as allowing you to go through to the website and make your purchase.

With the Apple iPad due to reach these shores in March, Apple have already started to negotiate with several UK Network operators regarding who will be the first network to provide the iPads mobile internet connection.

It is thought that a Wi-Fi ready iPad will be available before the end of May, however the 3G version (which requires a UK network operator) is expected to be available by April at the latest (subject to a deal being reached with either Orange, Vodaphone or O2).

The US network deal has already been completed with AT&T providing the mobile internet connection.

The Apple iPad becomes the next generation mobile device. With the iPhone proving to be a phenomenal success, Apple launch what is essentially a fully mobile, easy to use PC.

Large Screen

It has a wonderful, large, multi-touch screen, that will work in any orientation (i.e. Vertical or Horizontal). This means that, when you are surfing the web, you will be able to see the full page all at once (without having to scroll from side to side).

There will be the usual zoom facility, allowing you to look at photos more closely, as well as a thumbnail view, which will allow you to see all the web pages you have open. This lets you move quickly and effortlessly from one page to another.

Emails

Picking up your emails has never been easier. A landscape view will allow you to read an open email, as well as the emails that are left in your inbox. Turn the screen to a portrait position, and the email will now, automatically, fill the whole screen. The email system will work with Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL and MobileMe, as well as other popular email service providers. A large onscreen keyboard, allows you to compose your own emails with the greatest of ease.

Web Browsing

Similarly to the iPhones, the Apple iPad will have the Safari web browsing facility to surf the internet at your leisure. It is not clear yet whether Apple will allow a third party browser on their flagship iPad - at the time of writing this information Apple were considering the Opera browsing application, and have yet to decide whether they will allow them to use the Opera Mini Browser interface on iPhones. With the iPad 3G technology on the 3G models, browsing the internet will become even easier, allowing you to access the internet at your convenience. This will include downloading music, games and videos whenever it takes your fancy.

Photos

The iPad's photo application makes viewing your photo albums easier than looking through a traditional photo album. Tap on the album stack, and your whole album opens up. Flip through your photo's, watch them as a slide show, or zoom in and out to get a better look. Whilst charging your iPad, it can become a fantastic digital photo frame.

Videos & Youtube

The large, high resolution screen allows you to watch videos, making the iPad the perfect mobile entertainment gadget. View TV shows, podcasts and HD movies, switching between widescreen and full screen at the (double) tap of a finger. The screen view, when coupled with the YouTube application, allows you to watch, organise and navigate through your favourite YouTube clips.

iPod & iTunes

As you would expect, the iPad also becomes your IPod, allowing you to listen to all your music albums. As with the iPod, browse your albums, songs, artists or genre's, or simply look at your album covers and choose your band (and song). Enhance your listening experience with Bluetooth Wireless headphones (or wired headphones), however, don't' worry if you haven't got them with you, as the iPad has powerful inbuilt speakers that will more than compensate for your forgetfulness.

The iTunes icon allows you instant access to the iTunes store. Videos, music and movies are all downloadable wirelessly, meaning you could be sat on the bus, and simply buy the latest snow patrol album or song, and actually be listening to it BEFORE you get home!

App Store

As with the iPhone, the application store allows you to purchase games, business applications and much more. Over 140,000 applications are available for download, and again these can be downloaded wirelessly there and then.

Maps & Organiser

Maps, notes, calendars and contacts supply the finishing touches to the iPad. These features give you all the information you need, when you are on the move. Who are you seeing? What time are you seeing them? How do you get there? And you even have the ability to ring them (from your contacts) list to tell them you are running late. The iPad really is the next generation must have mobile device.

iBooks

The Apple iBook application is an incredible addition to any iPad. The application allows you to browse for your favourite books, download them and then store them in your very own virtual library. You can search for books by author, genre or title. Once you think you have found the book you wanted to purchase, check out any reviews that have already been submitted on the book, as well as having the chance to read a sneak preview. The iPad allows you to read the book in portrait or landscape orientation, with the turning of each page as easy as a light stroke of your finger across the Apple iPad touch screen.

Games

If you enjoyed playing games on your iPhone then playing games on your iPad will be great! With eleven titles being made available for the iPad US launch on the 27th March, your iPad will be a great companion on those long bus and train journeys. Launch titles include Ammoin HD, Grind HD, Labyrinth 2 HD, Worms HD and Sudoku Real Edition. Expect many more games to be made available once developers have got their coding chops around the iPad's capabilities.

Accessories

The Apple iPad has many different accessories to enhance the user experience. Firstly there is the iPad Case, which acts as both a protective case as well as a stand (to view you iPad without having to hold it in your hands). Then there is the communication element. The iPad has a touch screen keyboard, however there are also two other keyboards, the iPad keyboard (which can have an iPad dock attached) or the Apple Wireless keyboard. Finally, there is the iPad camera connection kit, the iPad 10W power adapter, the iPad dock connector to VGA adapter, as well as the Apple Earphones and apple component cables and apple composite cables. All these accessories add up to the device that could change the face of portable computing for ever.
